Pulled from the archives (meaning stuff I never have a chance to review and process) this photograph of oaks during a foggy morning in Amador County last year, exactly one year ago to this day. Processed through Nik Silver EFex Pro.
One of the great things about living in the foothills near Sacramento is the ability to drive a short distance in pretty much any direction for nature photographs. This is especially true during those mornings when you wake up to a blanket of velvety fog.
On this Sunday morning one year ago, I was determined to be out shooting before the fog burned off. There had been previous weekends with similar optimal fog, but the comforts of a warm house and bed prevented me from what I should have been doing: out in the fresh, albeit cold, air shooting photographs. The first stop of the morning was along a familiar stretch of Hwy 88, which has produced numerous photos featured on the blog, including one taken during this particular morning: >> Oak, Trees, Fog<<
The next stop was the Amador Central Business Park. This new business park contains some of the old right-of-way for the Amador Central Railroad, built in 1904 as the Ione & Eastern Railroad, which initially served the many high producing gold mines in the Motherload and also provided passenger service between Martell and the supply town of Ione. With the development of this business park, the track and ties within its boundaries have been taken up, but a 1/2 mile section has been provided as a walking trail.
It was along the tail end of this walking trail that I snapped this composition. While the stand of oaks in the back are rather innocuous and even pleasing as they are enveloped by the fog, it is this dominant foreground oak with branches that look like arms which provides a darker mood to the photograph. I wanted to accentuate this dark, foreboding scene and pull the photo into Silver EFex Pro and applied a medium sepia tone along with some other minor adjustments to achieve the result you see here.
