Tower Bridge, Sunset Clouds (Horizontal, Vertical)

Sacramento River, (Old) Sacramento, CA

Tower Bridge, one of the most iconic structures in Sacramento.  That means it is also one of the most over-photographed structures in Sacramento.  I had taken some touristy shots of the bridge almost 10 years ago and have never been back.  There are only so many ways to shoot this bridge and while this photograph isn’t groundbreaking, it didn’t make me want to toss my camera into the river.

Opened in 1935 at a cost of $666K, the Tower Bridge was part of US Route 40 and is a vertical lift bridge, meaning the center span moves up as one section and is parallel to the bridge deck.

So having convinced myself I would finally go back and shoot the bridge after exhausting earlier options on what to shoot near downtown, I was excited to see a patchwork of clouds lingering above.  I notice not 1, not 2, but 3 photographers with tripods aimed at various object.  One man was pointed towards the high rises in Sacramento, another was an elderly lady with two dSLR cameras around her neck, the third was a guy I saw a little later running all over the place capturing the Tower Bridge at various angles at sunset.

The elderly lady was very sweet.  She was explaining how her other photographer friends all seem to have better pictures than she does and how her nephew had just downloaded a copy of Photoshop 6 for her, but it was way too complicated.  I reminded her that she was in luck today because the clouds were about to burst into color in 15-20 minutes, and sure enough they did.  I hope she snapped a few great photographs!

Anyhow, I took both a horizontal (shown above) and vertical (below) composition of this scene.  The vertical composition might seem a little crowded while the horizontal scene seemed like there was too much sky to the left.  I even cropped out a tiny bit of the sky to balance it out.
