Praying Mantis, False Dittany

Ione, CA

It is Halloween here in the States.  I did have a decent full spiderweb photograph on standby, but it just did not turn out the way I wanted, so I will give you the next best thing in my portfolio, a shot of the alien-looking praying mantis in the garden staying still and blending in.

Unlike the bright green mantis photographed earlier this year, this one was a decidedly earthen grey color, likely to match with the spent stems of flowers from the adjacent lavender plant.  Taken at sunset, this ended up being a 4 second long exposure.  The great thing here is that the praying mantis tends to stay very still and this one didn’t move at all during the 4 seconds.
