There are stories to be told in the back alleys of Downtown Sacramento. It is not the sinister aspects still on display, but rather the remnants of shops and stores from bygone years. Vaughn – at Sather Gate no longer exists.
Established in 1928 by J.R. Vaughn in Berkeley, CA as purveyor of fine men’s clothing and named after the nearby Sather Gate on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley. Eventually these stores were in Seattle, San Jose, and eventually here in Sacramento.
In fact, the 1022 K Street location was not the first for Vaughn. Based on a vintage photograph at the Sacramento Public Library, one incarnation of Vaughn was at 1112 K Street in 1950. These days, with the renewal of K Street, including the reintroduction of cars on the street, this building is now the home of District 30 Nightclub. Yet, this old sign in the alley remains.
