Fall Colors in the Eastern Sierras are upon us again, even a bit past in the areas above 8500′ near Bishop. I have seen very few updates for the Hope Valley area this year so I will be making a trip up and through Hwy 88 and possibly Hwy 89 through Markleeville and Monitor Pass before possibly heading down to some areas around Mono Lake such as Lundy Canyon and the June Lake Loop before some night photography at the Mono Lake South Tufa area. If that all works out, I’ll likely take Hwy 120 (Tioga Pass) through Yosemite and take shots of the burned out areas from the Rim Fire near Hetch Hetchy and Groveland. Now that I think about it, I am much more excited about possibly shooting the burned out Rim Fire areas! I had hoped to drive to Groveland when the authorities re-opened Hwy 120, but had read cars were forbidden to stop along the re-opened road, so stopping and wondering off into the woods was out of the question.
Of course, I had intended to miss this entire Fall Color season in favor of hiking Half Dome in Yosemite with some friends. Unfortunately, with the US government shutdown, Yosemite is closed. So it is back to Fall Colors. I suppose my dismissive nature towards the Fall Colors is just that I have not put enough time together to do a real backcountry hike and that means I sometimes have to visit the popular locations. It is almost like a sporting event where a giant group of people show up early, capture “the shot” at some location and plan for the next one. Some lack common etiquette, trampling vegetation along the way, and walking into shots. Now backcountry and area less accessible to vehicles is where I should be heading off to.
So, never fear. The next post you see from me should be whenever I can find some free WiFi: either a Starbucks, McDonald’s in Gardnerville, NV, doubtful of any locations in Bridgeport, or the trusty El Mono Hotel in Lee Vining. Likely no photographs, but there will be a Fall Colors update of Hope Valley and sights along the way.
