In the midst of this time of the year of commercialism, short tempers, and even worse drivers masked as the season of giving, pause for a moment and realize how fortunate you are. In stark contrast to the view of this beautiful state capitol building, a giant Christmas tree, and the Hummer H3 parked in between are two homeless men sleeping next to a warm air exhaust vent. With temperatures in the 30s and 40s F, this is their gift. They are the fortunate ones this particular evening.
Sadly as I was setting up for another shot, a group of about ten 20-somethings, fresh from a night at a bar or club, were walking on the other side of the street. They were making a bit of a ruckus, jumping about and kicking plants. In their slightly intoxicated and heighten state of self worth, two of saw a homeless man tucked away in an alcove of a building. Not seeing what instigated the brief incident, the next thing I know, the homeless man is awake and in a defensive posture while two of the assholes are over him, laughing and yelling. 15 seconds later it was as nothing had happened. The group was further down the street and the man was back asleep.
This is not a post advocating you do anything drastic or even contribute to a cause. I would hope you do one thing better today because if you are reading this post, you are luckier than the gentlemen pictured here. Take a moment, take a breath, let the jerk at the store be a jerk and let it go, and let the idiot drivers do what they do.
