Entering our third consecutive dry winter, the primary water reservoir for the Sacramento area is now down to 19%. While the lake levels are typically low in the winter as the storms add snow pack to the Sierra Nevada and translate to a rising lake level during Spring runoff, 19% is way below the average 39% lake capacity this time of year. As a result, old building foundations at the bottom of the lake are now exposed. This has made for some fun daytime hikes for thousands of families during the New Year’s holiday break.

Initially I wanted to show the vastness of the cracked mud, but having buildings in the far off distance didn’t work. It wasn’t like I was out in Death Valley or Nevada with mountain ranges far away. So I went the complete opposite approach with this.
